Happy skin starts with a healthy body and mind. Our lifestyles have visible effects on our skin cells, so it’s important we find the time to make the right choices for our overall wellbeing. If we can do this, then we’ll start to see results on the outside while also feeling fabulous from within!
To help you on your way to a holistic approach to skincare, here are some lifestyle factors which we find have the biggest effect on our skin. We will help you find the root cause of your concerns and make any adjustments, giving you long-lasting results.
Diet & Exercise
As the old saying goes, you are what you eat. A healthy, balanced diet will give you healthy, balanced skin, while plenty of water will keep you hydrated. Drink the recommended 6-8 glasses of water a day, and take vitamin supplements to make sure you get all the nutrients you need.
Working up a sweat also does wonders for the skin and your overall wellbeing. When you get your heart rate up, you increase blood flow and improve circulation. This in turn gets plenty of oxygen and nutrients to the skin, promoting the growth of healthy skin cells.
Stress & Sleep
When under stress, your body releases the stress hormone cortisol. This was designed to help our bodies respond to urgent situations, but when stress is prolonged, it can cause inflammation. This is when the body responds to a threat, like a virus or bacteria, and sends out pro-inflammatory cytokines.
These chemicals cause flu-like symptoms, attacking the invader and then disappearing. But when dealing with chronic stress, the inflammation is always there. This causes a whole range of health issues, including ageing skin.
The key here is to slow down, clear your headspace, and take time for yourself. Yoga and pilates are great for getting the blood flowing and the mind relaxed, while plenty of sleep will give your body the time it needs to repair itself.
Environmental Damage
The environment can also have a big impact on our skin. Even on cloudy days, the sun’s harmful UV rays still penetrate through and cause ongoing damage to our skin. Whether it’s the height of summer or the depths of winter, give your skin a fighting chance and use SPF.
There are also pollutants all around which can cause ageing and inflammation. Damaged, sensitive skin has a weakened skin barrier, so make sure to nourish your body with food and creams rich in antioxidant properties. A deep facial will help cleanse away any impurities, too.
Hormonal Changes
There are stages in life that cause natural changes in our hormone levels. Those experiencing puberty are prone to acne, while those going through perimenopause and menopause may see signs of ageing.
These changes in hormone levels are natural, and we can’t control them. Instead, we can take steps to look after our overall wellness. By improving other areas of our lifestyle which we can control, we can help manage the effects of hormonal changes.
A Holistic Approach to Skincare
While the right products are important, they only play a small role in keeping your skin healthy. The true key is to give your skin a strong foundation, and taking a holistic approach to skincare will leave you and your skin glowing from within.
