What does milia look like?

Milia are small, white, cyst-like bumps that commonly appear on the skin, typically around the eyes, cheeks, or forehead.

Unlike pimples, milia do not cause redness or swelling, making them often less noticeable unless closely examined. They can be particularly stubborn, and while they are not painful, they can detract from the skin's smooth appearance.

What causes milia?

They are caused by keratin (a protein in the skin) becoming trapped beneath the surface, forming a tiny, hard, white bump. Milia are caused when dead skin cells become trapped within the skin, forming small cysts under the surface. This can occur for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Excessive use of heavy skincare products: Using thick moisturisers or creams that can clog pores, particularly around the eyes and face.

  • Sun damage: Overexposure to the sun can lead to a build-up of dead skin cells, increasing the likelihood of milia formation.

  • Skin trauma: A history of skin irritation or injury, such as burns or rashes, can also contribute to the development of milia.

  • Skin care routines: Improper exfoliation or not cleaning the skin thoroughly may contribute to the formation of these little bumps.

Should I be concerned about milia?

Milia are generally harmless and do not pose a health risk. They are considered a cosmetic concern rather than a medical one.

However, they can be frustrating to deal with, especially when they appear on the delicate skin around the eyes. If milia are persistent or appear in clusters, it’s always a good idea to consult with a professional to discuss treatment options. In rare cases, if you notice new milia appearing in unusual locations or in a larger number, a consultation with a dermatologist may be necessary to rule out any underlying conditions.

How do we treat milia at Elite Skin Studio?

At Elite Skin Studio, we offer advanced electrolysis (short-wave diathermy) for safe, effective milia removal. This treatment uses a precise electrical current to break down the hardened keratin under the skin’s surface, allowing the milia to be safely removed. Here’s how we do it:

  1. Consultation: During your consultation, our experts will assess the size and location of the milia and determine the most suitable treatment plan.

  2. Treatment: Using a sterile probe, we carefully target the milia with short-wave diathermy to remove them with precision. The treatment is quick, and you will experience minimal discomfort.

  3. Aftercare: After treatment, the area may be slightly red or tender, but any marks should subside within a few days. We'll provide you with simple aftercare instructions to ensure the skin heals properly.

How do I prevent milia from coming back?

To prevent milia from reappearing, it’s important to take steps to maintain healthy, well-exfoliated skin:

  • Adjust your skincare routine: Avoid heavy, pore-clogging products around your eyes and face. Opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers and sunscreens.

  • Use quality skincare: Incorporate ingredients like retinol and lactic acid, which help promote skin cell turnover and prevent clogged pores.
  • Wear sunscreen: Sun damage can cause the skin to build up dead skin cells, increasing the likelihood of milia. Always use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
