What does a syringoma look like?
Syringomas are small, benign sweat duct tumours that appear as firm, flesh-toned or slightly yellowish bumps on the skin. They typically appear around the eyes, particularly on the lower eyelids, but can also be found on other areas of the body.
These bumps can vary in size, from small pinhead-sized dots to slightly larger growths, and while they are harmless, they can be bothersome for those who prefer a smoother complexion.
What causes syringomas?
While the exact cause of syringomas is not fully understood, they are believed to be linked to overactive sweat glands. Key contributing factors include:
- Genetics: Syringomas can run in families, with some individuals being more likely to develop them.
- Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, especially during puberty or pregnancy, can trigger the development of syringomas.
- Excessive Sweating: Overactive sweat glands in certain areas can contribute to the formation of these bumps.
Should I be concerned about my syringoma?
Syringomas are typically harmless and pose no health risk.
They are benign (non-cancerous) growths that do not require treatment unless they become bothersome or aesthetically unpleasing. If the syringomas cause irritation or grow in size, it’s advisable to seek treatment.
How do we treat syringomas at Elite Skin Studio?
At Elite Skin Studio, we use Sterex Advanced Electrolysis (short-wave diathermy) to reduce the size and appearance of syringomas.
This treatment involves the application of a fine, sterile needle that uses low-frequency electrical currents to target and diminish the bumps. The procedure is non-invasive, precise, and typically requires multiple sessions for optimal results. Electrolysis is a safe and effective way to reduce syringomas and restore a smoother skin surface.
What can you do to prevent syringomas from coming back?
While there is no guaranteed method to prevent syringomas from reappearing, a few measures can help minimise the risk of new growths:
- Sun Protection: Always apply a high SPF sunscreen to the treated areas to prevent sun damage.
- Gentle Skin Care: Avoid harsh exfoliants or irritants around the affected areas, particularly around the sensitive eye region.
- Healthy Skin Routine: Maintain a gentle skincare routine to support your skin’s health and minimise irritation.
