What does a mole look like?

Moles are common growths on the skin, typically brown or black in colour. They can vary greatly in size and shape, from flat spots to raised or textured bumps.

Some moles can be small, while others can be larger, with a slightly irregular or uneven appearance. Moles can appear anywhere on the body, but they are most commonly found on the face, neck, and arms.

What causes moles?

Moles form when pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) grow in clusters, rather than being spread out across the skin. The exact cause isn’t always clear, but several factors can contribute to mole development, including:

  • Genetics: Family history of moles can increase the likelihood of developing them.

  • Sun Exposure: UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds can stimulate the formation of new moles or cause existing ones to grow.

  • Hormonal Changes: During periods of hormonal shifts (such as pregnancy or puberty), moles may change in appearance or size.

Should I be concerned about my mole?

Most moles are harmless and non-cancerous. However, it’s important to monitor any changes in your moles. You should seek medical advice if:

  • The mole changes in size, shape, or colour.
  • It becomes itchy, painful, or bleeds.
  • It has irregular borders or an asymmetrical shape.
  • It shows sudden growth or any signs of infection.

At Elite Skin Studio, before any mole treatment begins, we require either a GP letter of consent for treatment. This ensures that the mole is suitable for reduction and doesn’t have underlying medical concerns. This process is a necessary prerequisite of treatment.

How do we treat moles at Elite Skin Studio?

Please note, this treatment outcome is mole reduction, not complete removal. Rather than cutting out the mole, we use Sterex Advanced Electrolysis (short-wave diathermy) at Elite Skin Studio. A fine, sterile needle applies a low-frequency electrical current to the mole, gradually reducing its size and diminishing its appearance without invasive surgery.

The treatment process:

  • Consultation and Medical Diagnosis: Before any treatment, a consultation is required in the Studio to assess the mole. You will also need to provide a letter of consent from your GP for treatment. It is advised you obtain this letter prior to booking your consultation with us so there are no delays to your treatment journey.
  • Multiple Sessions: Mole reduction is a gradual process, and typically requires multiple sessions for noticeable results. While the treated area may show some reduction after the first session, full results usually take time to develop.
  • No Guarantee: Although mole reduction can significantly improve the appearance of the mole, there are no guarantees that the mole will be fully removed. Sometimes, additional sessions are necessary for optimal results.

What can you do to prevent the mole from coming back?

While mole reduction can significantly improve the appearance of the mole, it is important to remember that new moles can still develop, and the treated mole may grow back. To help prevent this:

  • Sun Protection: Always wear a high SPF sunscreen, especially on treated areas, to prevent UV damage, which can trigger new moles.

GP Letter of Consent
To ensure safe treatment, we require a GP letter of consent before mole reduction. This process ensures the mole is assessed by a professional, confirming it is suitable for treatment. A consultation charge applies, and if a diagnosis or GP letter is needed, additional costs may apply.
