What do skin tags look like?

Skin tags are small, soft growths that hang off the skin, often resembling a small piece of flesh or a “flap.” They can range in size from a tiny bump to a larger growth and are typically flesh-colored or slightly darker.

Skin tags commonly appear in areas where skin rubs together, such as the neck, underarms, eyelids, and groin. While they are usually harmless and painless, they can be irritating, especially if they catch on clothing or jewelry.

What causes skin tags?

Skin tags are generally caused by friction. They develop when skin rubs against skin or clothing, leading to excess skin growth. Common causes and risk factors include:

  • Friction: Skin tags often appear in areas where skin rubs against other skin or clothing, such as the neck, armpits, or thighs.
  • Age: Skin tags are more common as we age, with many people experiencing them after 40.
  • Genetics: If you have family members with skin tags, you may be more prone to developing them.

Should I be concerned about skin tags?

Skin tags are generally harmless and do not pose a health risk. They are not cancerous and don’t cause pain, though they can be bothersome if they catch on clothing or jewelry.

If a skin tag becomes painful, changes colour, or bleeds, it's important to seek medical advice to ensure it’s not a more serious condition. In most cases, skin tags can be safely removed for cosmetic or comfort reasons.

How do we treat skin tags at Elite Skin Studio?

At Elite Skin Studio, we use advanced electrolysis (short-wave diathermy) for safe and effective skin tag removal. This treatment uses a precise electrical current to target and remove the skin tag, ensuring a quick and effective solution. Here’s how we treat skin tags:

  1. Consultation: We’ll assess the size and location of your skin tag(s) during a consultation and determine the best course of treatment.
  2. Treatment: Using a sterile, fine probe, we apply short-wave diathermy to the skin tag. The heat effectively removes the skin tag, leaving the surrounding skin intact.
  3. Aftercare: After treatment, there may be some redness or mild swelling in the area, but this should subside within a few hours to a few days. You’ll be given aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing.

How do I prevent skin tags from coming back?

While it’s not always possible to prevent skin tags, here are a few tips to help reduce the risk of developing new ones:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing: Avoid tight clothing that rubs against the skin, especially in areas where skin tags are common.

  • Stay moisturised: Keeping the skin hydrated can help reduce irritation and prevent friction that leads to skin tag formation.
  • Keep an eye on changes: If you notice new growths, it’s always a good idea to have them assessed by a professional to ensure they are indeed skin tags.
