Serborrheic Keratosis

What does seborrheic keratosis look like?
Seborrheic keratosis (SK) appears as a raised, round or oval, often brown, black, or light tan growth on the skin. These benign lesions can range in size from small spots to larger, more prominent growths.
They tend to have a rough or warty texture and can look like a stuck-on patch of skin. SKs are typically found on the face, chest, back, or shoulders, but can appear anywhere on the body except the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Though generally harmless, seborrheic keratosis can be unsightly or bothersome, especially when they become irritated from rubbing against clothing or jewellery .
What causes seborrheic keratosis?
The exact cause of seborrheic keratosis is not fully understood, but several factors contribute to their development:
- Age: SKs become more common with age, typically appearing after the age of 40.
- Genetics: There is a genetic component to seborrheic keratosis. If family members have them, you may be more likely to develop them.
- Sun Exposure: Prolonged sun exposure over the years can trigger the formation of SKs, especially in areas frequently exposed to the sun, like the face, neck, and chest.
- Skin Friction: Skin friction, from clothing or jewellery, may also contribute to the formation of seborrheic keratosis.
- Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during pregnancy or menopause, may play a role in the development of seborrheic keratosis.
Should I be concerned about seborrheic keratosis?
Seborrheic keratosis is usually benign and doesn’t pose any health risk. These growths are non-cancerous and typically don’t require treatment unless they become irritated, painful, or bothersome.
However, if you notice any changes in size, shape, or color, or if the lesion starts bleeding, it’s important to have it assessed by a professional to rule out any other conditions. For cosmetic or comfort reasons, many people choose to have their seborrheic keratosis removed.
How do we treat seborrheic keratosis at Elite Skin Studio?
At Elite Skin Studio, we use advanced electrolysis (short-wave diathermy) to safely and effectively remove seborrheic keratosis.
This treatment works by applying a small, sterile probe to the affected area, using heat to break down the keratin and remove the growth. Here’s how we treat seborrheic keratosis:
- Consultation: During your consultation, our skin specialists will assess the size and location of your seborrheic keratosis to determine the best treatment approach.
- Map My Mole Diagnosis (if needed): If the seborrheic keratosis requires further assessment, we may send a picture of the lesion to a dermatologist via Map My Mole for approval before proceeding with treatment.
- Treatment: Using a fine, sterile probe, we apply short-wave diathermy to the seborrheic keratosis, delivering precise heat to remove the lesion without affecting the surrounding skin.
- Aftercare: After treatment, you may experience mild redness or swelling in the area, which will subside within a few hours to a few days. You will be given aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing and prevent irritation.
How do I prevent seborrheic keratosis from coming back?
While it’s not always possible to prevent seborrheic keratosis, taking steps to protect your skin can help reduce the likelihood of new growths:
- Sun Protection: Always wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, which can trigger the formation of new SKs.
- Moisturise Regularly: Keeping the skin hydrated can help prevent dryness and irritation that may encourage new growths.
- Avoid Friction: Be mindful of areas where your skin rubs against clothing or jewellery to reduce the risk of developing new lesions.
- Regular Skin Check-ups: Keep an eye on any changes in your skin and book regular consultations with a professional to monitor any new or changing growths.
