Throughout April, we’re shedding light on a common yet often misunderstood skin condition: rosacea. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like bumps on the face. While it can vary in severity, it often impacts individuals’ confidence and well-being.
Understanding Rosacea
Rosacea is a complex skin condition that manifests in various forms, ranging from mild flushing and persistent redness to more severe symptoms like visible blood vessels, papules, and pustules. While the precise cause of rosacea remains elusive, researchers suggest a combination of genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, vascular dysfunction, and immune system abnormalities contribute to its development.
Genetics may predispose individuals to rosacea, with certain families exhibiting a higher prevalence of the condition. Environmental factors such as sun exposure, extreme temperatures, spicy foods, alcohol, and stress are known triggers that can exacerbate rosacea symptoms, leading to flare-ups and increased redness.
Underlying vascular abnormalities play a significant role in rosacea, contributing to the characteristic flushing and persistent redness seen in affected individuals. Additionally, dysregulation of the immune system may lead to chronic inflammation, further aggravating skin symptoms.
Rosacea often presents in adulthood, typically between the ages of 30 and 50, although it can occur at any age. It tends to affect fair-skinned individuals of Celtic or Northern European descent more frequently, but it can also occur in individuals of any ethnic background.
