2020 has been a year of change, and face coverings are now a big part of the new normal. While masks are necessary for protecting ourselves and those around us, they bring with them a whole other challenge for delicate skin – maskne.

What Is ‘Maskne’?

Medically known as acne mechanica, this skin condition is caused by wearing face masks for long periods of time. As the coverings rub tight against our faces, they reduce the amount of light and air that reaches our skin. This creates the perfect climate for breakouts, with sweat, oil and bacteria clogging up the pores.

If your pimples and spots are centred around the chin, nose and mouth, then it’s likely that your skin is suffering from maskne. The size and type of spots that appear will also vary depending on the amount of bacteria present, from whiteheads and blackheads, to red and raised.

So, how can we help our skin stay healthy and keep our complexions clear?

1. Always Wear A Clean Cotton Mask

Wash reusable masks in between uses. Dirt, oil and humidity create the perfect environment for bacteria to grow, and this is the primary cause of breakouts. We also recommend using cotton or silk masks. These are kinder to the skin and cause fewer micro-tears, helping reduce the level of infection.

2. Double Cleanse

In the evenings, purify your skin with a double cleanse. First, use a gentle cleansing oil to draw out the top layer of dirt and oil. This then allows your normal cleanser to penetrate even further and clear any remaining residue, achieving a deep and effective cleanse.

3. Use AHA Toners

Toners containing Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) are brilliant for clearing the complexion. AHA is a chemical exfoliant that gently unclogs the pores, clearing away dead skin, oil and bacteria. It also hydrates the skin while smoothing out any bumps and evening the skin tone.

If you’re suffering mostly from whiteheads, this means there’s an excess of bacteria present on the skin. Try a toner containing Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) instead, as this will penetrate the skin even further for a deeper cleanse.

4. Moisturise With Vitamin A

Vitamin A is essential for all good skincare routines, and is especially valuable for those with sensitive skin. It has been scientifically proven to strengthen the skin and speed up the natural healing process, proving invaluable for fighting back against maskne.

5. Avoid Make-up

It can be tempting to try and cover up any blemishes, but it’s best to leave them be. Maskne is caused by poor ventilation, and any additional layers will only suffocate the skin further. If you do want to wear make-up, then look for a mineral-based range.

Jane Iredale are especially good for sensitive skin, containing ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These help soothe inflammation, and are also non-comedogenic so they won’t clog up your pores. With flawless coverage and a range of skin care benefits, they’re perfect for bringing back your confidence while tackling a breakout.

6. Weekly Treatments

A regular skincare routine is key to maintaining a clear complexion. The Revival Masque from Environ is an effective treatment that reduces the appearance of uneven skin texture, rejuvenating any problem areas and leaving your skin with a radiant glow.

Plus, a little time for self-care can do wonders for your personal well-being. Taking 20 minutes for a soothing face mask can restore not only your complexion, but also your confidence.

A New Routine For The New Normal

Follow these steps and help your skin take a stand against maskne. With the right skincare routine, you can keep your confidence high while protecting yourself and those around you. You’ve got this!
